The book series entitled “Tourism Studies on the Mediterranean Region”, launched in 2021 by the Institute for Studies on the Mediterranean (ISMed) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), focuses on current research and practice in tourism in the Mediterranean area. It proposes an integrated analysis of how geopolitical, socio-economic and cultural variables are interrelated with tourism, providing a critical evaluation of policies and measures for industries and governments aimed at boosting tourism while promoting the structural transformation of the sector towards environmental, socio-economic and cultural sustainability. The second book in the series offers new critical perspectives on tourism, hospitality and culture 4.0 as well as the paradigmatic shift towards the metaverse. The volume also enriches the methodological approaches traditionally applied in this growing research area by presenting innovative multidisciplinary empirical research focusing on tourism businesses and destinations. The chapters are theoretically and empirically driven, adopting a variety of qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches. They discuss such issues as the use of big data, artificial intelligence/machine learning and IoT in tourism and hospitality; the role and impacts of service robots and automated technologies in the tourism, culture and hospitality industry; the major role which technologies 4.0 can play in rendering businesses and tourism destinations more accessible to all, thus contributing to making tourism more sustainable; immersive and non-immersive technologies and how they shape visitor experience; the impacts, opportunities and challenges that the metaverse presents to the tourism industry. The book is relevant both to those working in academia and in the industry itself. On the one hand, it deepens our understanding of the impact of technologies 4.0 on the sector in question, while identifying interesting avenues for future research. On the other, it offers a wide array of insights and applications for policy makers, destination marketers and managers seeking effective ways to use technologies 4.0 in their marketing strategies and operations. The pragmatic perspective adopted by the different chapters contributes to making the book essential reading for those following undergraduate, masters and postgraduate courses.
