The word "senseable" has a double reference: "Sense - able", as in "able to sense", as well as "sensible", or sensitive. Senseable cities are smart cities, with a different take to them. The definition stresses their human, rather than technological, element.
We can imagine interactive cities that can better communicate and meet the citizens' needs, thanks to the information provided by the world of nets.
Smart mobility, smart networks to connect things, an ever-present cloud: the deepest paradigms are changing, yet their effects can not be managed with a techno-centred approach. Thus, there is room for a humanism of the technological thinking, focussed on simplicity!
What this book stresses, is the idea of carefully evaluating how smart and sustainable cities should be developed. A city characterized by highly technological and social interconnection, that intends to pursue a project of sustainable development should have a capable, smart, transparent and inclusive governance with a clear and shared vision focussed on well-being, quality of life and sustainability. In order to achieve these goals, such a city will not only have to acquire and develop material supports of urban intelligence, but it must also be able to be part of a network that keeps it in touch with other countries developing similar projects.
Smart cities also need to enhance the knowledge and performance of their human capital through actions such as education, long-lasting updating,innovation promotion in the companies of their territory and in their own offices, knowledge development in the circuits producing art as well as development of urban planning and scientific research.
